What Is Responsible Gaming?

This September marks the 25th year of Responsible Gaming education by the American Gaming Association. There’s a lot to celebrate, but there’s still a lot for the public to learn about what Responsible Gaming really means.

Responsible Gaming, often used interchangeably with Responsible Gambling, is the mindset of using gambling for fun and entertainment. It’s not the same thing as “problem gambling”, though the two are often confused. The difference lies in the steps taken to keep betting light and fun, avoiding issues before they arise.

These steps include:
●       Setting time and/or spending limits on your gambling. Some online casinos allow you to set a timer, which will alert you after it expires.
●       Take breaks, whether it’s setting a 24-hour “cool off period” on your favorite gambling sites or limiting your trips to the casino in a given time period. Some in-person casinos may also have self-exclusion programs that can help you stick to your boundaries.
●       Only gamble when you have money to spend, and don’t rely on it as a source of income. If you’re not in a good place financially, it’s not a good time to play.

These goals form the basis of Responsible Gaming. Sticking to them can be tricky, just like maintaining most good habits, but here are some tips to make it easier.
●       Surround yourself with positive influences. If possible, only gamble with others who gamble responsibly and will help hold you to your goals.
●       Don’t gamble under the influence or when you’re in a bad mood. It increases the likelihood of overspending and making negative emotions even worse.
●       Seek in-person and online casinos that institute Responsible Gaming practices and have them easily available to find.
●       Measure your gaming experience by enjoyment instead of the money lost or earned.
●       Be aware of problem gambling signs so that you can recognize them before an addiction arises.
